The prophetic selection for this Shabbat is the haftarah of
Kedoshim. The prophet Amos calls for obedience to the law of
G-d. Therefore, the haftarah parallels the theme of the Torah
reading. Amos, although a Judean, preached in the Northern Kingdom
of Israel in the eighth century B.C.E. Although this was a time
of great prosperity in Israel, the prophet was more concerned
of the ethical deterioration of the nation. He refers to Israel
as "the sinful kingdom". The prophet speaks of the
"Day of the L-rd" when the kingdom of David will be
re-established. This time will be an era of prosperity and renewal.
The people shall return to the land of Israel. "And I will
turn the captivity of My people Israel, and they shall build the
waste cities, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards,
and drink the wine thereof. They shall also make gardens, and
eat the fruit of them."
