The haftarah of Balak derives from the teachings of Micah. Micah teaches of the remnant of Israel who will triumph over her enemies. G-d will destroy all the idols that have threatened Israel's commitment to her faith.
Micah chapter 6 is written in the classic prophetic style of the riv, the rebuke of Israel. Heaven and earth are called upon to provide testimony against Israel's faithlessness to her G-d. "Hear, you mountains, the L-rd's controversy, and you enduring rocks, the foundations of the earth, for the L-rd has a controversy with His people, and He will plead with Israel."
The prophet invokes G-d's faithfulness. G-d has redeemed Israel from Egypt and provided Israel with Moses, Miriam, and Aaron as leaders.
Micah castigates animal sacrifice that is not matched by Inner
transformation. He stipulates the core of true religion. His
words have inspired thinkers throughout time. "It has been
told you, O man, what is good, and what the L-rd requires of you;
only to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with
your G-d.
