The prophetic selection is from Jeremiah. The prophet foretells of the destruction of Egypt by the Babylonians. The prophecy against Egypt seems appropriate to the subject matter of the Torah reading. Jeremiah shares that Egypt will be exiled and her cities shall be destroyed. "The daughter of Egypt is put to shame. She is delivered into the hand of the people of the North."
However, Jeremiah asserts, Israel shall survive. "Fear
not, Jacob, My servant. Neither be dismayed, O Israel. I will
save you from a distance and your seed from the land of their
captivity. Jacob shall be quiet and at ease. No one shall frighten
him."
