Parallel to the story of Abraham, the prophetic selection shares the last days of King David. However, the last days of King David are filled with strife and contention, unlike that of Abraham. The narrative is selected from First Kings, chapter one.
The beautiful Avishag, the last of King David's many women,
is brought to the king to arouse him. However, Avishag fails
to stimulate the king's interest in her. Adoniyah, the son of
David and Haggit, attempts to start a rebellion in order to succeed
his father on the throne. Adoniyah has the support of Yoav and
Aviatar, but not that of Nathan the prophet. Nathan convinces
Bathsheba, David's beloved wife, to speak to her husband. David
had promised Bathsheba that Solomon, her son, would reign as the
heir to his father. Bathsheba shares the political reality with
her aged husband. Adoniyah is attempting to usurp the throne
unless David clearly asserts his wish that Solomon will succeed
him. King David swears that Solomon will reign as the next king
of Israel. Bathsheba expresses her gratitude to her husband and
king.
