Parashat Lech Lecha
Haftarah Summary

The haftarah for the Torah selection of Lech Lecha is taken from the writings of the prophet Isaiah. This selection is attributed to the anonymous prophet of exile known to scholars as the Second Isaiah or Isaiah of Babylon. The Second Isaiah offers hope and comfort to the people of Judah as they await redemption from exile. The prophet believes that the power of G-d will not fail His people. "But they that wait for the L-rd shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings as eagles. They shall run, and not be weary. They shall walk and not faint."

The prophet shares the majesty of G-d. Isaiah portrays a G-d of transcendence who is above and beyond time. "I, the L-rd, who am the first, and with the last am the same." Isaiah speaks of the intimacy of G-d with the patriarchs Jacob and Abraham. Therefore, this passage was associated with the Torah reading of Lecha Lecha, the narrative of Abraham.

Isaiah offers hope to the exiles of Judah. He gives strength to the weary. "Fear not, for I am with you. Be not dismayed, for I am your G-d." The support of G-d's right hand is associated with victory. Israel's lowliness of spirit is compared to a worm. Nevertheless, Israel shall emerge triumphant due to the might of G-d.
