Haftarah of Nitzavim-Vayelech
September 23, 2000

This Shabbat, we read the last of the seven haftarot of comfort. These selections from Isaiah form a cycle from Tisha B'Av to Rosh Hashanah. These beautiful words of poetry are attributed to the Second Isaiah, the anonymous prophet of the Babylonian exile.

The prophet speaks of the restoration of Judah to her land. "I will greatly rejoice in the L-rd. My soul shall be joyful in my G-d." The people shall return to their beloved Jerusalem. They will make certain the city is protected. "I have set watchmen upon your walls O Jerusalem. They shall never hold their peace day nor night. You who are the L-rd's remembrancers, take nor rest, and give Him no rest, till He establish and till He make Jerusalem a praise in the earth."

Isaiah chapter 63 speaks of G-d as a divine warrior who will defend His people.
