The prophet Ezekiel shares a message against the Egyptians.
Therefore, the prophetic selection parallels the reading from
the Torah. Although Ezekiel himself lived in Babylonia during
the time of the Babylonian Exile, here his remarks are addressed
against Egypt. The prophet portrays Egypt as "the great
dragon that lies in the midst of his rivers." G-d will vanquish
the Egyptians. The cities of Egypt will be destroyed. The Egyptians
will be exiled. King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon is portrayed as
the instrument of the divine wrath against Egypt. With the
decline of Egypt, Israel shall be redeemed.
