The prophetic reading of Parashat Vayehi shares the farewell message of King David to his son Solomon. This farewell parallels the farewell of Jacob to his sons in the Torah selection. King David reminds Solomon that he must be faithful to the covenant with G-d. King David also reminds Solomon of the treasonous behavior of Yoav and Avner. David calls for vengeance. The king also speaks of the kindness owed to the sons of Barzilai. David died and was buried in Jerusalem, the city he had conquered from the Jebusites. David had reigned from Hebron for seven years and from Jerusalem for thirty-three years. King Solomon assumes the throne as the third king of Israel.
