Haftarat Yitro

The prophetic selection for Yitro is the call of Isaiah to prophecy. This reading parallels Israel's experience at Sinai. Isaiah envisions the "seraphim" as he experiences the "glory" of the presence of G-d. The angelic words are enshrined in Jewish prayer, "Kadosh, kadosh, kadosh".

Isaiah is overwhelmed by his experience. Ironically, he feels spiritually "defiled" by his interaction with the glory of G-d. When the prophet is purified, he receives his mission. Isaiah learns of the destruction of Judah. However, a remnant shall survive that is committed to G-d's teachings. Isaiah's son signifies this remnant, as his name is "Shear-yashuv". The name means, "A remnant shall return."

The prophetic selection then skips to Isaiah chapter 9. This passage is one of the messianic selections that are most significant in Christian exegesis of the Hebrew Bible. Most scholars believe that Isaiah felt that the young prince Hezekiah would usher in a new age for the kingdom of Judah. Isaiah gives the prince a symbolic name, just as he had given one to his own son. " The Mighty G-d is planning grace; the Eternal Father, a peaceable ruler." Isaiah believed that King Hezekiah would usher in an era of peace. Isaiah's hope for a time of justice and righteousness has inspired Jews throughout the centuries.
